Nature of Work

AIANZ's Government relations internship is an integral part of AIANZ's Campaigning Program.

The work of Government Relations interns includes work on regular on-going campaigning tasks and a major contribution to the development and implementation of the key human rights agendas and campaigning programmes that reflect the strategic role the organisation has determined it can play from New Zealand.

The work of the Government Relations intern specifically focuses on:

  • intergovernmental organisations and their related meetings
  • our relationships with foreign governments through their embassies in NZ
  • our relationship with the NZ government on human rights issues both specific and general

Applicants will ideally have, or be completing, a degree in political science, international relations, international law or public policy. Some knowledge or understanding of the NZ parliamentary system would be an advantage. Some knowledge of international human rights law or practice of international relations or intergovernmental organisations is useful.

Interns will be responsible for drafting and tracking governmental correspondence, drafting and editing submissions, reports and briefings, and tracking inter-governmental meeting calendars. Interns may also be invited to attend meetings with government officials and ministers where appropriate.
