AIANZ's refugee internship is an integral part of AIANZ's Campaigning Programme.
It is based at the AIANZ Service and Development Office in Auckland, NZ. Internships are 3-6 months in length and part-time for a minimum of 20-hours a week.
The work of the refugee intern specifically focuses on:
- Documenting, researching and responding to asylum seeker and refugee queries.
- Researching and documenting gaps within NZ's current policy and laws which deny or limit asylum seeker/refugee access to their rights.
- Working alongside other agencies to protect and promote refugee rights.
Applicants will ideally have, or be completing, a tertiary qualification in development studies, or law with an interest in human rights, international law, refugee law or similar. Some knowledge or understanding of New Zealand's stance on refugees or hands-on experience within the refugee community would be an advantage.
A good level of English fluency is required for this position.
Interns will be responsible for
- managing and undertaking interviews with asylum seekers/refugees, liaising with other refugee agencies and lawyers, assisting the refugee co-group with its meetings and workload;
- undertaking research as directed
- monitoring media coverage in NZ on asylum seeker/refugee issues.
