The Children's Rights Network
Posted December 13, 2007 - 10:37am
The Children's Rights Network of AINZ was formed in June 2002 for adults and young people who wished to campaign for the rights of children. Membership is open to all members of Amnesty International and the network includes local Amnesty groups and school groups as well as individual members.
The aim of the network is to see that the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocols are observed throughout the world and within New Zealand. In these treaties, a child is defined as anyone below the age of 18 years.
The network publishes an email newsletter every second month with an occasional urgent appeal case sent to members between newsletter issues. Among the topics and appeals which appear in the newsletter are:
The network also works with the Office of the Commissioner for Children, UNICEF and children's NGOs in New Zealand to create a lobby for children's rights in this country. The aims are to reduce the incidence of child abuse and of child poverty as required by the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Non-members of Amnesty, join Amnesty (minimum subscription $20 a year) and request membership of the children's rights network. Email info@amnesty.org.nz
