→Urgent Action Network
Members of the Legal Network can choose to participate in the Urgent Action Network (UAN). AI appeals about torture, 'disappearance', arbitrary arrest without charge, refoulement or the death penalty are often sent to members through the UAN. Immediate action is necessary to save lives and stop torture. Your swift response (by fax, email or letter to government authorities) can help to save lives and stop torture.
→Contributing to Amnesty Campaigns
Legal Network members participate in wider Amnesty campaigns on human rights violations in specific countries or on specific issues (e.g. Stop Violence Against Women), focussing on the legal aspects of the campaigns.
→Participating in Special Projects
The Legal Network runs its own special projects, researching, monitoring and advising Amnesty New Zealand on a range of topical issues, eg the War on Terror and assisting with making submissions on bills before parliament. As a member of the Legal Network, you will be able to participate in whichever of the current projects aligns best with your own interests and experience.
Hosting speakers, and organising events are amongst other options members can involve themselves in.
→Education
The Legal Network works to sensitise the New Zealand legal community to violations of human rights throughout the world. Members speak at meetings and seminars, and publish articles in professional journals.
→Working with Legal Associations
The Legal Network works to encourage national associations to take action against violations of human rights, such as extra-judicial executions, 'disappearances', the death penalty, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
The network publishes three or four email newsletters each year, featuring:

In many countries around the world, lawyers are at the frontline of the defence of human rights, and as a result, they themselves can become victims of human rights abuses.
