Who we are campaigning for: Peace Communities of San Jose’ de Apartado

The Peace Community of San Jose’ de Apartado is a group of individuals who defend their right not to be drawn into Colombia's armed conflict. They refuse to take sides with any of the parties to the conflict. Since 1997, more than 170 of their members have been killed or subjected to enforced disappearance, while others have been threatened or sexually assaulted. Those in the Peace Community are in constant danger.
The Court of Human Rights has ordered the Colombian authorities to protect the San José Peace Community. Their demands that the parties to the conflict not enter their community have been ignored and they continue to be threatened and not protected by authorities.

Take action for the Peace Community of San Jose’ de Apartado
Take action on behalf of the Colombian Peace Communities! Here are some of our ideas:
- Raise awareness of the issue by undertaking an assembly or street theatre action with soldiers dressed in camouflage threatening peaceful civilians
- Organise a “Peace of the action” stall - encouraging fellow students to take action in return for peace-sign decorated biscuits
- Get all students to create a giant peace sign with their bodies and take photos to send to Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos calling for protection and peace for this community
- Get everyone to sign the letter then send it
- Get school musos to perform John Lennon’s song “Give peace a chance” while you are taking action
