Who we are campaigning for: Women of Zimbabwe Arise

Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) which also includes Men of Zimbabwe Arise (MOZA), is a group which has been repeatedly arrested by the Zimbabwe police while taking part in peaceful demonstrations to protest the worsening social, economic and human rights situation in the country.

Babies and young children have been detained with their mothers, sometimes overnight in police cells without access to adequate medical treatment. Together they have faced intimidation, harassment, and physical abuse by police officers. Many of those arrested have later been released without charge, but some have been charged under repressive legislation such as the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and the Miscellaneous Offences Act (MOA).

Take action for WOZA

WOZA’s activism stems from a love of their country. This is why they use the slogan ‘The power of love can conquer the love of power’

Take action for WOZA by drawing on symbols of love in your activism. For example:

  • Organise a speed dating event to highlight WOZA’s call to choose love over hate, as part of its annual Valentine’s Day action.
  • Organise a march for love emulating WOZA’s ‘marching for love not war’ and along the way collect donations and signatures.
  • Make and hand out paper roses in return for signatures or donations.
  • Highlight your event with chalked hearts
  • Collect signatures for the petition to President Mugabe, asking him to protect the rights of the members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise.
