Internships at Amnesty - FAQ

How do I apply for an internship?
You  can do this by completing our application form and either emailing it to applynow@amnesty.org.nz or sending it by snail mail to Amnesty International Internship Programme, PO Box 5300, Wellesley Street, Auckland 1141, New Zealand.

Can I do a part-time internship?
Yes, we require interns to be available for at least 30 hours a week, although priority will be given to applicants who can commit to a full-time internship.  If you would like to do a full-time internship office hours are generally 9am-5pm.  Hours and days of work are flexible and worked out on a case-by-case basis with the intern's manager.

Do I get paid for my internship?
Amnesty will pay you a small amount for days you are in the office to cover transport and lunch costs.

How often are the volunteering and internship opportunities advertised?
Roles are usually advertised for one month twice a year for an intake in February and July.

Can I apply for more than one internship?
Yes, you may apply for different internships but you must do so separately with different application forms.

I am not a New Zealand national - can I do an internship in New Zealand?
We actively encourage applications from all around the world. If shortlisted, we will arrange a telephone interview.

For further information regarding visas visit http://www.immigration.govt.nz/

Note that you will be responsible for all costs - including visa applications, flights and living costs when you come to New Zealand.

How long will I need to commit for?
Intake 1 requires interns to commit to a 5 month period (February – end of June/beginning of July of each year)

Intake 2 requires interns to commit to a 6 month period (end of June/beginning of July – mid-December)

There is flexibility around hours and time off for studies when necessary

Can I complete a generic application for roles that do not exist?
Due to the high number of applications we receive, you can only apply for the roles that we advertise on the website. We neither consider generic application forms nor CVs.

Will I have the opportunity for employment at AIANZ at the end of my internship?
While Amnesty International employs staff, we are essentially a voluntary movement of more than 3 million people worldwide who contribute what they can - time, expertise and/or money - to international campaigning against human rights violations.

We encourage interns to apply for any paid positions we may have open, but the completion of an internship does not guarantee employment at AIANZ.
