ISP Update – Friday 29 August 2008

Introduction

As you may be aware Amnesty International (AI) is currently engaged in the process of developing a new Integrated Strategic Plan (ISP) that will guide the movement through the period 2010-2016. The ISP serves to systematically map and prioritise all the vastly divergent areas of work that AI will undertake, to ensure we have the greatest possible impact for human rights.

An overview of the ISP Consultation Process

The ISP is being developed through an extensive process of movement-wide consultation in which all AI sections and structures as well as other interested individuals and groups are able to participate and have input through contributing their ideas and perspectives. The consultation involves three stages, the first of which has now been completed. The first Consultation Pack focused on the world at large - the global context for AI’s human rights work, looking at the world as it is now and as it may develop in the years to come. AIANZ has enthusiastically taken the opportunity to contribute to the new ISP through canvassing the opinions of our stakeholders and making a submission to the ISP Committee which strongly articulates the views of our stakeholders and reflects our unique position in the South Pacific.

ISP Consultation Process Timeline

The process of developing the new ISP is ongoing and the end product will not be finalised until 2009. There are two more phases of movement-wide consultation scheduled between now and then, and at this point we would like to draw you attention to these and invite you to have your say when the time comes. In sum, the timeline we are following looks something like this:

  • Consultation Pack One - The World We See: Completed.
  • Consultation Pack Two - AI’s Role in the World: Issued by September; give us your feedback by 31 October.
  • Consultation Pack Three - The draft ISP: Issued in January 2009; give us your feedback before April 2009.

Other Consultation Seeking Your Input: Strengthening Democracy Within Amnesty International

Currently AIANZ is undertaking another round of consultation, independent of the ISP, which you may also be interested in participating in. The movement is currently seeking to examine the nature of democracy within Amnesty International and consider how best to reinvigorate and strengthen our democratic governance. Proposals regarding a new governance model and basic governance systems and processes have been developed and we are now seeking your feedback.
