All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
- Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 1
Our new campaign, Demand Dignity, aims to end the human rights violations that drive people into poverty.
Around the world, more than a billion people are suffering because of the human rights violations at the core of poverty.
Poverty is not just a lack of income – it is the denial of access to the resources necessary to human dignity – for example food, water, housing, health and education. These are basic human rights that are protected under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Poverty is neither accidental nor inevitable. It results from the decisions made by governments and other decision makers who hold the power to change people’s lives for the better. We believe that in working towards a solution to poverty, we must hold to account those making the political decisions which violate human rights.
