Right to Safe Motherhood

This statistic demonstrates a human rights tragedy that is preventable. Yet complications related to pregnancy are the single largest cause of death among 15 to 19 year old girls and women in developing countries.
In too many places, medical care for pregnant women is of poor quality or simply inaccessible for women living in poverty. Without reproductive health care and freedom women cannot fully exercise their fundamental rights such as education and employment.
- Expose and highlight the scandal of preventable maternal mortality;
- Campaign for the development and implementation of an effective national human rights-centred maternal mortality plan in countries of focus;
- Mobilise the broader public to push their own governments to remove barriers to the access of health services.

Every eight hours, a woman dies in Peru as a result of pregnancy or because of complications during labour. Maternal mortality rates in Peru are among the worst in the region. They are disproportionately high among the country's poor and indigenous rural communities.
