Election Campaign

On 26 November this year New Zealanders will have the opportunity to exercise their right to chose who will be elected to make this country’s most important decisions – decisions that will have an enormous direct impact on the daily lives of each and every one of us.

The upcoming General Election is also an opportunity for us to ensure New Zealand puts human rights first.

In the lead up to the election, we are calling on all MPs and candidates to make two very simple commitments: make rights real in New Zealand and champion human rights in the Pacific.

We have published campaign digests on each of these issues which provide more information on the two strands of our Election Campaign and our recommendations:

•    Make Rights Real!
•    Champion Human Rights in the Pacific

How you can play a part in putting human rights on the agenda

This election campaign is a fantastic opportunity for us to tell New Zealand’s politicians who Amnesty is, what we do, and how they can join us to promote and protect human rights.  It is also an opportunity for you to BE ONE MORE, ASK ONE MORE and ACT ONCE MORE in our 50th Anniversary year by getting involved in the election campaign and encouraging your friends and family to get onboard too.

You can get involved by:

  • Meeting with your local MPs and candidates
  • Attending meetings and debates and asking questions
  • Writing letters to the editor of your local paper
  • Organising an election debate

To learn more about how you can be part of our 2011 Election Campaign, please get in touch with our Advocacy and Government Relations Manager Chris Kerr on 09 303 4524 or chris.kerr@amnesty.org.nz and we’ll resource you with everything you need to convince New Zealand politicians to put human rights first.
