Write for Rights

Global Writing Marathon, 5 - 13 December 2009

We’re writing for human rights

Every year, as part of our celebrations for International Human Rights Day (10 December), thousands of people around the world come together to make a difference in the lives of prisoners of conscience, human rights defenders, victims of torture and other individuals at risk.

Using the proven power of writing letters, we will demand that the rights of individuals are respected, protected and fulfilled and to show solidarity with people who suffer human rights abuses.

Why we're writing

The letters we write, together with those of thousands of others, can stop torture, save a life and/or protect a courageous human rights defender. These letters will help to put pressure on governments (and international organisations) that are failing to stop human rights abuses. They can help people get their voices heard.

Amnesty International was founded by one person going public with his letter-writing action. Click here to see how ordinary New Zealanders are still doing that today.
