Amnesty’s visible presence – by way of vigils to meet and greet PI leaders as they arrived at formal PIF events - was under the tag line of “Pacific Leaders: change the lights on women’s rights”. The messaging reflected the stop/start approach that many PI leaders are taking to SGBV and the different levels of progress countries are at. While substantial progress has been made to draft action plans and specific legislation, that progress will only be turned into effective measures to protect women if leaders move from rhetoric to reality. Information on the progress of Pacific Island Nations on SGBV can be found here.
Two placard messages highlighted the need for PI leaders to “Invest in their women” and implement “Laws protecting women now” to (a) buy into the over-arching focus of the Pacific Island Forum on economic development and (b) detail a key measure to ensure progress. The vigils were strongly supported by Auckland activists including Auckland Girls’ Grammar students.
