Amnesty responds to the PIF leaders’ meeting communique

The Waiheke Declaration – the PIF’s 42nd Communiqué detailed priorities and challenges facing nations in the region. The Communiqué prioritised sustainable economic development for the region, but it is the concern of Amnesty International that until Pacific leaders fully recognised the rights of their women that development will be limited. Amnesty International welcomed the commitment towards addressing gender equality and sexual and gender-based violence. But concrete legislation must be put in place to ensure real protection for Pacific women.

Amnesty acknowledged that progress has been made towards combating sexual and gender-based violence and the invaluable work of the Forum Reference Group and other civil society organisations had done to create a platform in which to build a legal framework through the implementation of action plans and policies. However it is important for these draft laws to be put into action to ensure real protection for women and their families.
