Amnesty is 50

Fifty years ago, one man, outraged by injustices he saw, made an appeal to others to unite with him in common action.  He saw that by using our rights, our freedom to act for a just world, it was possible for ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things.

Since then, countless individuals have worked together under the banner of Amnesty International to insist that the rights of each and every human being are respected and protected.

28 May 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of Amnesty International. From one man's realisation in 1961 that people are stronger when they act together, we have grown into a global movement of over 3 million supporters.

We will be marking this amazing journey with a year of action and celebration. We hope you will join us.
