How we work

Amnesty International is a campaigning organisation. We research, document and report on human rights abuses.
Our members take practical, effective action to stop these abuses. Most of our work involves persuading states to honour internationally agreed laws and standards.
In terms of action, we work at local, national and international levels to take action against specific abuses.

Internationally, we go on missions to investigate abuses, conduct research and meet with high-level officials such as Presidents and Ministers.

On a national level we meet with government officials, ask celebrities to take action or promote Amnesty and talk to companies about their human rights responsibilities.

On a local or regional level, our members within teams are the face of Amnesty in their community who undertake an array of activities from meeting with their local MP’s, undertaking speaking engagements including to local media, holding demonstrations or vigils. They regularly hold letter writing or social events to highlight an Amnesty case: Real people saving real lives.

We work by co-ordinating actions that people take so they can put pressure on governments much more effectively than if acting alone.
