Inside Amnesty

"It's better to light a candle, than to curse the darkness"

Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand is one of 150 nationally organised sections or structures that make up the global Amnesty movement.

We exist to help New Zealanders add their voice to help defend the human rights and dignity of people everywhere.

Our international headquarters are based in London, United Kingdom.

The very first Amnesty group in New Zealand was formed in Wellington in 1965, making us one of the oldest sections in the Amnesty network.

We now boast some 13,000 individuals and groups who all play an active part in defending human rights.

We are a democratic organisation

Our members set policy and key priorities within the framework of the worldwide movement. They do this by attending our Annual General Meetings.

Our work is always being monitored and assessed by our members, Board and staff. When major changes in policy and approach are needed, it is Amnesty International's members that make the final decision.

At a global level, our members elect members from New Zealand to represent them at the International Council Meeting. This is a bi-annual gathering of Amnesty representatives across world which sets the major policy decisions, priorities and direction of our movement.
