Amnesty International submission on the Arms Amendment Bill

4 April 2019, 16:18 UTC | New Zealand

Amnesty International supports the passing in New Zealand of the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Bill.

We recommend that in the second stage of reforms, the New Zealand Government should establish a more robust system for the regulation of the possession and use of firearms and ammunition, to prevent them from being used by private actors to abuse human rights. This should include improved licensing, a register of firearms, security of stocks, research and public policy development, and regulation of firearm manufacturers, distributors and dealers.
