The Indonesian Government plans to develop mining in an area of Papua that is a hotspot for abuses by government security forces.

In the Sugapa district of the Intan Jaya regency is one of the biggest gold ore reserves in Indonesia, known as Wabu Block.

But 2020-21, at least 12 Indigenous Papuans there were victims of unlawful killings carried out by Indonesian security forces. These local people are also subject to raids, beatings and restrictions on their movement. They even have to ask permission to garden, shop or visit another village.

Plans for gold mining must be paused and the Indonesian Government must seek the free, prior and informed consent of Indigenous Papuans in the region.
