UPDATE – In response to global outrage, President Trump signed an executive order on 20 June that he claims would end family separation. But families will still be kept in cages. The new order mandates that children stay with their parents in detention while their asylum claims are processed. It imprisons families indefinitely, inflicting further harm on children.
The order does nothing to reunite the over 2,000 children who have been forcibly separated from their parents. Rather than presenting a solution, it is just a new way to punish parents and children for seeking protection.
No human being should ever be denied a right to seek safety, and no child seeking safety is ever illegal.
